Join a community of educators helping students become powerful storytellers and civic actors!
Our partnering educators join the Civic Life Project’s Democracy in Action program by attending virtual workshops in the summer and fall to ensure they are equipped to engage with the curriculum and deliver it effectively.
In addition to the below virtual workshops, educators and their students will have access to a filmmaker consultant for technical troubleshooting during students’ documentary production.
Professional Development
To prepare and support educators, we offer the following top-notch remote professional development workshops as well as ongoing technical support.
Digital Storytelling & Civic Engagement
This workshop introduces the Civic Life Project and how documentary filmmaking is a tool for civic learning and engagement, reviews the goals and expectations of the program, and fosters connection and community among the teacher cohort.
Democracy in Action Curriculum Review
Held in two sessions, these workshops provide an In-depth lesson-by-lesson curriculum review and Q&A with our curriculum developer or a partner educator who has implemented Democracy in Action.
Develop Your Story
Finding the specific story students are passionate about and identifying the story’s framing, research skills and resources, identifying, contacting, and scheduling interviewees, find visuals (B-roll) that support their story
Interviews & Transcripts
Interview preparation, such as developing open-ended questions, signing release forms, recording interviews, finding visuals (B-roll) that support the story, organizing materials into categories, and making selects.
Treatments & Final Production
This workshop covers structuring the documentary before beginning the editing process, and dives into adding visuals, B-roll, narration, graphics, music, titles, and credits.
